| HelixChat: A Helix Client/Server Demo | |||
| Important |
On November 20, 2008, a new version of Helix Server was put into live testing. Customers who wish to connect to HelixChat need to download a new Preview Beta Client. |
||
| What Is HelixChat? |
As part of the testing for Helix Server 6.0, we wanted to conduct a large-scale public test of our new TCP/IP networking software. Practically as an afterthought, the test included a Chat window that allowed those helping out to post comments as they tested. Even though the Chat window was unoptimized, the feature proved to be quite popular. So we decided to ‘finish’ it and put it to work as the foundation of a weekly online one-hour meeting. Since then, we have been using HelixChat to provide a forum where Helix users around the world can talk — about Helix or whatever — in a live setting. In essence, HelixChat is a multiuser chat service, like a simple form of iChat. But it runs on Helix Client/Server, and for Helix users, that makes it worthwhile all by itself. |
||
| What Does HelixChat Do? |
HelixChat serves many purposes:
Because HelixChat is a Helix collection, the chats are preserved and available for review at any time. You don't have to be connected at the same time as other users to carry on a conversation. |
||
| Note |
The code for the HelixChat itself is available in the samples library on our FTP server, in case you want to put it — or the techniques it employs — to use in your own collections. |

| HelixChat |
Using HelixChat is pretty simple: identify yourself, type a message, and click the Post Message button. Your comments can now be read by Helix users all over the world! And don't forget: every Friday afternoon (US Eastern Time Zone, -0500 GMT) members of the QSA ToolWorks staff drop by to join in on the conversation. If you want to talk directly to us, this is a great way to do it. |
