| Welcome to Helix 6.1 | |
| Introduction |
Helix 6.1 represents the second stage of our work in updating our code for OS X. Helix Server, Helix Utility and Update Collection were released as OS X native products in Helix 6.0. Helix 6.1 will soon bring Helix Engine and Helix Client to OS X native status. Helix RADE & the Helix Developer Utility remain Classic (OS 9) only for the time being. All products except Helix Server are also available in a compatible Classic version. |
| About Helix 6.1 |
Helix 6.1 is a new release, continuing our focus on the transition to an entirely OS X native product line. There are functional changes and feature additions, which you can read about by clicking on the product links. Helix 6.1 contains components for each of Apple’s three distinct OS platforms:
|
| Backwards Compatible With Helix 6.0 |
Helix 6.1 is fully compatible with Helix 6.0. You can move your collections back and forth between the two versions with no intermediate steps whatsoever. Because of the significant amount of code that has been rewritten for the OS X native products, it is possible that bugs or missing features in the early OS X Helix 6.1 releases could prevent you from completing your work. Should that be the case, you can temporarily revert to Helix 6.0 while we work on addressing the situation. |
| How to Upgrade |
Owners of Helix 6.0 licenses are entitled to free updates to Helix Server for PowerPC, Helix Client for PowerPC, and Helix Engine for PowerPC. Those who wish to run Intel-native Helix must purchase an upgrade. Those running on Intel-native Macs who do not want to purchase an upgrade can run the PowerPC-native Helix products using Apple’s Rosetta emulation software. Helix RADE 6.0 owners are entitled to a free update to Helix Engine for PowerPC 6.1. There is no OS X version of Helix RADE at this time. Helix for PowerPC products use existing Helix 6.0 enablement keys. To update, simply download the program you need and apply your existing enablement keys to them. If you have lost or misplaced your enablement keys, log in to your account and click the Current Keys link. If you have any questions about this upgrade policy, please contact us. |

| Preview Release Products | |
| ‘Preview’ Releases |
Because of the pressing need for OS X-native Helix, we are making select products available in what are being termed ‘Preview Releases.’ In a Preview Release not every feature available in Classic Helix is available and the features that are available may exhibit buggy or flaky behavior. However, we are confident that they correctly handle the most important task: storting and retrieving data. Should you find that a Preview Release does not work to your satisfaction, backwards compatibility with Helix 6.0 enables you to switch back to Helix 6.0 (Classic) at any time. It is our plan to release a series of rapid-fire updates, addressing limitations as quickly as possible. |
| ‘Semi-Complete’ Releases |
The initial releases of OS X-native Helix 6.1 are being termed ‘semi-complete,’ as not every feature available in Classic Helix is yet available in OS X Helix. Should you find that you need a feature that is not yet available in OS X native Helix, backwards compatibility with Helix 6.0 enables you to open the collection with a Helix 6.0 (Classic) application, access that feature, then switch back to Helix 6.1 (OS X). It is our plan to release a series of rapid-fire updates, adding in missing features until the OS X feature set is complete. |
